Tommy Wiseau Makes a New Film…and It’s Intentionally Bad

For those of you unfamiliar with the filmmaker/writer/actor at the center of this post, a bit of background:

In 2003, a film called The Room was released and only made $2,000 initially at the box office. The director/writer/star of the film, Tommy Wiseau, compared the film to the works of Tennessee Williams while The Guardian called it a mixture of “Tennessee Williams, Ed Wood and R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet.” Since The Room is viewed as being one of the worst films ever made, it has become well-known to bad movie buffs and has developed a cult following. For those of you that want a synopsis, you can find it on Wikipedia.

Like many films that have gone down in history as being terrible, Wiseau didn’t set out to make a terrible film when he made The Room. Claudio Fragrasso, Ed Wood, and M. Night Shaymalan probably never set out to make the terrible movies they made, but that’s what they’re remembered for. McBain is a bad film, but it’s clear that the filmmakers weren’t trying to make a bad movie.

The key problem with this new short film from Tommy Wiseau is that it is intentionally bad. Sometimes, you can do intentionally bad and do it well; after attending two of the nights of DrekFest this year, I’m convinced of this. The House that Drips Blood on Alex is intentionally bad and it doesn’t do it well. The beauty of The Room is that it is as melodramatic as a Twilight novel—although the characters in The Room have more depth than those in Twilight. This is trying to be funny and ends up feeling like a bad [adult swim] show. The lines such as “Home sweet house” are trying to play off of Wiseau’s awkwardness.

A bad movie or play is usually memorable and The House That Drips Blood on Alex fails to be that way because it seems as though Wiseau realized what a cult film The Room was and is trying to duplicate that. Thankfully, The House That Drips Blood on Alex doesn’t try to resort to having Wiseau/Alex say, “Oh hi, house,” “Oh hi, blood.”

Actually, that might have made it a bit funnier.

Anyway, judge for yourself by watching it at Atom.com because I can’t figure out how to embed it into this post.
